Somalia: Struggling to survive

Life is challenging for many people across Somalia, where life expectancy is very low.

When it comes to staying healthy, there are multiple challenges.

With climate change-induced drought and a lack of water, crops arent growing enough. Families are therefore going hungry with two million people without regular access to food.

What’s more, in addition to food shortages, people are often forced to drink unsafe water. This means that men, women and children are risking contracting waterborne diseases such as cholera and acute watery diarrhoea.

With a staggering 73% of the population currently living on less than £1.50 ($2) a day, our projects aim to provide emergency relief and sustainable development.

Years of conflict and instability mean that millions of people across Somalia face an uncertain future. Out of a population of over 14 million, around 6.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

People and communities across Somalia share the same hopes and dreams as us yet many face life threatening challenges: poor access to safe drinking water, education and sanitation.

Islamic Relief in Somalia

With the ongoing food crisis across East Africa, we are continuing to serve communities across Somalia providing emergency relief. Our emergency programmes continue to help displaced people in areas across the Puntland and Somaliland. In 2011 alone, our £22 million emergency relief programme provided one million people with food aid, 400,000 people with clean drinking water and over 10 tonnes of medication to hospitals and health centres.

Fundraising Ideas*

Smarties: Buy 20 tubes of Smarties and give them to 20 of your friends. Your one condition? Once they’ve enjoyed the Smarties, they return the tubes back to you filled with as many £1 coins as they can collect in a week. You’d be surprised how much you can raise using this tactic!

Bake Sale: A true classic. How about adding a theme to your fundraiser depending on the cause you’re raising for? E.g. a blue theme if you’re fundraising to provide clean water. Or you could really go for it, sell other homemade delights alongside your delicious baked goods like milkshakes, smoothies or classic desserts (trifle, cake & custard etc.).

Car Wash: Probably the most fun thing you could do, and all you need is water, a bucket, a sponge and some car shampoo. You could do this at your school or workplace, or you could even ask a local business to let you use their grounds/car park. Try make it more interesting by doing it in fancy dress and get your family and friends in on all the fun!
