UK Qurbani – Helping at home

According to the Office of National Statistics, 7.3% of the population are subject to “persistent poverty”. For people living in the UK, this means being unable to afford regular essentials such as adequate home heating, a telephone, housing and even a regular source of protein a few times a week.

Across the UK, a staggering 4.7 million people are living in food poverty. Many individuals are left unable to maintain a varied balanced diet or at worst risk simply going hungry without outside help.

At Islamic Relief UK, we recognise the increasing needs of communities at home. One of the ways we’re helping address this crisis is by distributing Qurbani to people in need.

Caring for the Local Community

We work alongside a range of local and national organisations supporting vulnerable adults and children. This allows us to distribute Qurbani meat via regional centres and amongst local charities, community groups and service providers to ensure it reaches those who need it most.

In 2017 alone, we distributed Qurbani meat to around 38,000 individuals across England, Scotland and Wales. With the help of our partners Amirah Foundation, FareShare, InTouch Foundation and Sufra NW London, we supported individuals across the UK, including London, Hull, South Wales, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.

Some of the many places where your donations have been making a difference are:

  • Refuges
  • Food banks
  • Community and day centre centres

By providing a source of healthy protein you’re offering vulnerable people with little or no income a huge health boost. A key source of iron and vitamins, your Qurbani meat helps boost energy levels and immunity to bacteria, whilst lowering the risk of anaemia, low blood pressure and muscle and joint pain.

You’re crucially helping people like 19-year-old Amina*, a mother of two living in London with no income of her own and no job. Likewise, for 50-year-old George* who is unemployed and cannot afford to buy meat, your donations have also provided a helping hand.

Alhamdulillah, your support is enabling us to making a crucial difference to their lives.

Across the UK, as both individuals and communities continue to struggle against poverty, we’ll continue working to ensure that these vulnerable people have a more stable, secure future.
