Syria Update

Syria Update

Since the conflict began over three years ago in March 2011, over 160,000 people have lost their lives in the Syrian conflict and millions have been forced to flee their homes. The humanitarian situation is deteriorating every day at an alarming rate. Official figures state approximately 9.3 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance, and at least one million people of these are in Aleppo alone.

The humanitarian situation in Syria is severe. The public infrastructure inside Syria is severely damaged including homes, clinics, hospitals and other essential services such as water and sanitation networks. Violence restricts men, women and children’s access to potable water, food and health services. Many displaced Syrians are living in unbearable conditions – warm clothing, heating, and blankets are in dire need.

2.7 million Syrians have fled to neighbouring countries, seeking refuge in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt, and North Africa. In addition, there are Palestinian refugees trapped in the besieged Al Yarmouk camp, and figures suggest about 540,000 Palestinian refugees currently require humanitarian assistance in Syria.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Islamic Relief has been helping vulnerable people inside Syria and in neighbouring countries by providing a range of support including food, health and shelter.

In 2014, Islamic Relief continued its emergency to alleviate the suffering of Syrians both inside the war-torn country and inside Syria and in neighbouring countries. We provided the most vulnerable groups with assistance in various sectors, including food, water and sanitation, health, and shelter. From the beginning of this year up until 28 April 2014, we had reached 76,500 people inside Syria, 231,552 individuals in Jordan, 102,828 people in Lebanon, and 142,500 individuals in Iraq.

In April 2014, we have provided:

–          132,980 food parcels and vouchers

–          314,857 medical disposables and pieces of equipment

–          Financial support with rent for 419 families, and 476 sheets of plastic for shelter

–          19,096 blankets and mattresses

In addition, we also provided baby food and nappies, hygiene kits, clean water, heaters and fuel, cooking sets, clothes…and much more

Urgent action is needed to alleviate the suffering of people in Syria who are trapped by the ongoing fighting. Donate now to our Syria Appeal.
