We know that Allah loves it when we ask of Him, and He has promised to answer us quickly when we pray for our brothers and sisters – so what are we waiting for? It’s time to raise our hands and pray for the nearly 800 million people around the world who don’t have access to clean water.

Abu Dawud reports that the Prophet ﷺ used to make the following supplications to ask Allah for water:

***

اللّهُمَّ اسْقِ عِبادَكَ وَبَهـائِمَك، وَانْشُـرْ رَحْمَـتَكَ وَأَحْيِي بَلَـدَكَ المَيِّـت

“O Allah, give water to Your slaves, and Your livestock, and spread Your mercy, and revive Your dead land.”

Allahumma sqi  ‘ibaadaka wa bahaa-imaka, wabshur rahmataka, wa ahyee baladak al-mayyit

***

اللّهُمَّ اسْقِـنا غَيْـثاً مُغيـثاً مَريئاً مُريـعاً، نافِعـاً غَيْـرَ ضار، عاجِـلاً غَـيْرَ آجِل

“O Allah, shower upon us abundant rain, beneficial not harmful, swiftly and not delayed.”

Allahumma sqinaa ghaythan mugheethan, maree-an, muree’an, nafee’an ghayra dhaarrin, ‘aajilan ghayra aajil

***

One of the best times to make du’a is when it rains – this is a time when Allah’s mercy is being sent to the earth, as He describes in the Qur’an: “And We send down from the skies water rich in blessings” (50:9).

The Prophet ﷺ said “Two supplications will not be rejected: when the adhan (call to prayer) is being recited, and when it rains.” (Ibn Majah)

Alhamdulillah, here in the UK there is rarely a shortage of rain showers during which to pray for our brothers and sisters who may not see rain for months on end! Next time you see those blessed drops fall, take a moment to remember them in your prayers.
