Our Top Ten Highlights from 2018 – What a Year It’s Been!

It’s been a busy year here at Islamic Relief with many highs and lows. Whilst war continued to devastate Syria and Yemen, natural disasters repeatedly hit vulnerable communities across the globe in areas such as India and Indonesia. Here in the UK, poverty also continued to be an ever-increasing reality.

However, thanks to your support, we were able to continue transforming and saving lives – and often have some fun in the process! Here’s our highlights for 2018 – take a look and prepare to be amazed!

1. Yusuf showed us how saving lives isn’t easy

Remember Yusuf? Yes, we showed you just why our work is so important and how saving lives is anything but easy! Check out the video below for a refresh and a good giggle to end the year.

2. Natco raised £50,000 for Water for Life

Ramadan is a time of giving and compassion, so we were delighted when Natco helped us raise a staggering £50,000 for our Water for Life project during the holy month of Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “The best charity is giving water to drink”* (Ahmad) and thanks to your support we were able to provide even more vulnerable people across the globe with safe drinking water.

3. You pledged to #HonourHer

In April, we launched our first ever campaign on gender-based violence calling on supporters to #HonourHer. Ambassadors such as Maria Idrissi and Myriam Francois-Cerrah joined us in the call to end violence against women and girls, whilst our team raised our voice in parliament. You also joined us in raising crucial awareness by signing up to pledge your support and raise crucial awareness. Thank you!

4. AimIR went royal!

Alhamdulillah! Our AimIR Volunteer Leadership programme has not only been going from strength to strength but this year the ground-breaking programme also won the prestigious City & Guild Princess Royal Training Award. What a fantastic achievement! A huge well done to our all participants and to our programme leads!

5. You supported communities in need across Sudan

Thanks to your continued support, this year we were able to support countless communities in need across the globe. One such community – which often goes unheard of – is South Sudan. Our work in South Sudan aims to financially empower locals and build peaceful, more cohesive communities. Masha’Allah!

6. You bought cakes for Syria!

Who can resist cake? Yes, our annual #Cakes4Syria campaign was another roaring success this year. Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and supporters, to date a staggering 25,206 cakes have been sold. Thank you!

7. Eid celebrations went to Parliament!

Last June, we wanted to share the joy of Eid far and wide. That’s why we celebrated Eid with Secretary of State Penny Mordaunt and some of our amazing campaigners in the House of Lords. We helped Muslims and non-Muslims alike remember just how important it so to help those in need every month of the year.

8. You met the challenge 37 times

It’s no secret that we love a good fundraising challenge and alhamdulillah, we’re never short of support. This year was no different. In fact, you took part in a monumental 37 challenges! Yes, you walked, you ran and you cycled to help save and transform the lives of vulnerable communities across the globe. From the Marrakesh Half Marathon, Ottoman Cycle Challenge and Great Scottish Run to the Snowdon Challenge, you raised a staggering £280,000.

9. Your Qurbani fed the needy at home

With a shocking 1 in 5 people across the UK living in food poverty, we’ve been working to ensure that your Qurbani helps vulnerable people here at home too. SubhanAllah, this year your Qurbani reached a staggering 45,000 people across England, Scotland and Wales, offering protein-packed nutrition and a helping hand. Insha’Alllah, next year we’ll continued to help even more people in need.

10. You led another fantastic Charity Week

Charity Week never fails to amaze and this year stood up to the challenge! A staggering 3,800 of you from 145 institutions up and down the country took to your campuses and local town/city centres to raise money for orphans and children in need across the globe. Raising over a million pounds, you really put the fun in fundraising, including paying £6,000 for a single banana! Thank you for being as whacky and enthusiastic as always!

SubhanAllah, what a year! As always, we couldn’t have done any of this without your amazing continued support. So, to our partners, volunteers, fundraisers and supporters alike – thank you!

As we now approach the New Year, from everyone at Islamic Relief UK, we’d like to wish you a blessed, fruitful year ahead insha’Allah. Jazakum Allah khairan.
