Mali: Clean water transforms lives

Following conflict and with high levels of poverty, life can be incredibly challenging for many people in Mali.

For displaced families in particular, accessing essentials such as a clean, safe water supply is particularly difficult.

When we met Gninè from Mambiri village, we discovered that she and her family has been forced to leave their home as a result of the conflict.

Sadly, this story is all too common.

Gninè: No longer dreaming of daily essentials

Gninè is from Mambiri village and married just two years ago. However, married life didn’t get off to an easy start.

Gninè, her husband and children were forced from their home as a result of the conflict.

Alhamdulillah, they moved to a new village and were given space to settle down by the village chief. However, the family had no access to water.

To get water, Gninè would have to wake up every day at 5 am to walk more than 400 m to the first water point. She would have to wait for over an hour and then 45 minutes to get back home.

Of course, the family couldn’t shower regularly because of the lack of water. SubhanAllah, this something that we take for granted each and every day…

This is where Islamic Relief stepped in, alhamdulillah!

We provided the community with a water supply, meaning Gninè and the rest of the displaced women can breathe a sigh of relief.

They have drinking water points near their houses and so Gninè now wakes up every day without feeling pressured or anxious, as she is able to use this water point for all her domestic water needs.

The family is able to shower regularly and wear clean clothes. What’s more, Gninè and the other women no longer argue about the water supply and are all friendly with each other:

When I finish my housework, I take my nap because the only concern that prevented me from doing it before no longer exists. So, we pray that Allah blesses Islamic Relief and its donors. (Gninè)
