A global hunger crisis has been rapidly engulfing regions across the globe, with millions of children, women, men, and elders in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities highly at risk.

The combined effect of four failed rainy seasons has pushed parts of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia to the brink, killing livestock, forcing people to leave their homes and increasing levels of child malnutrition. The Russian invasion has exacerbated the situation, pushing up the price of staples such as wheat and sunflower oil, as well as fuel.

Famine-like conditions are threatening over 43 countries worldwide

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of people of suffering from hunger and food insecurity has more than doubled. An astonishing 811 million were undernourished and food insecure in 2021, and the situation is continuing to worsen with famine-like conditions threatening over 43 countries worldwide.

Climate disasters such as extreme droughts are causing famine in East Africa, ongoing conflicts such as those in Afghanistan and Yemen, together with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, have put major strains on populations who are already facing severe food insecurity.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has pushed millions beyond the initial crisis into dire circumstances, as global prices for food and fuel soar, impacting the most vulnerable communities first.

Right now, one person is dying every 48 seconds from hunger

It is estimated that one person is dying every 48 seconds from hunger in East Africa. The hunger crisis also poses a horrific risk to the more than half of the population in Afghanistan, including the nearly 9 million people who are one step away from famine. In Yemen, a devastating 19 million people, comprising mostly of children and women are in need of emergency assistance as they continue to face stark shortages of food.

You have the power to prevent this situation from deteriorating, please donate to our global hunger emergency appeal now.

Our teams are on the ground providing life-saving aid

Islamic Relief are on the ground working to support thousands of people across Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Yemen with life-saving food and non-food parcels, containing flour, oil, pulses, rice, sugar, and salt. Our mobile health units provide remote and displaced communities with the only source of healthcare available, and hygiene and sanitation kits and training are essential for preventing disease outbreak.

Crucially, Islamic Relief is also working to provide long-term support to those in need, but we need your help. To tackle food insecurity, we need your support to help innovating programmes supporting thousands, including orphans, who rely on humanitarian organisations to provide the aid that they desperately need during this crisis.

Without your help, the food crisis will continue to reach unprecedented levels, and many vulnerable people will face the consequences.

Please donate now to our global hunger emergency appeal and help save lives.

* £65 will provide food for a family for one month in Afghanistan, Ethiopia and South Sudan, however in Yemen the cost for a similar food pack is £80. Due to ongoing conflict, blockades and delays in food imports, the food prices in Yemen constantly fluctuate. At times food prices have more than doubled during the ongoing conflict which began in March 2015. Islamic Relief Yemen continues to provide life-saving aid to those most in need through its partnership work with international organisations such as the World Food Programme. We will regularly update price handles to reflect the current situation on the ground.
