Islamic Relief is looking for people to take part in this year’s winter ‘survival camp’ taking place in Stockport next month.
Participants will face some of the trials refugees around the world experience every day throughout the winter months. For 24 hours you will ‘live’ in a hostile environment. You will sleep in a tent and live on similar rations that are provided for refugees.
Each participant will need to raise a minimum of £175 to take part and this year the money raised will go towards helping refugees in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.
Islamic Relief is hoping to raise £10,000 through sponsorship of those taking part in the survival camp.
Zia Salik, Islamic Relief’s National Community Fundraising Manager, said:
“Although our ‘refugees’ will only be in the survival camp for 24 hours, it will not be an easy challenge. They will experience some of the trials that many refugees face on a daily basis. All the money raised from the survival camp will help support our life-saving work. For every £175 raised we will be able to feed a family for a month. We will also be able to provide items including blankets, warm clothing for children and mattresses. For many, it could mean the difference between life and death.”
Last year’s survival camp raised £15,000.
Abdurrahman, one of the participants from last year’s survival camp, said:
“You really can’t understand the extra struggle that winter brings until you’ve experienced the harshness of it yourself. The fact is that millions of people don’t have a home to go to and they don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.
“This allowed us to help families and understand their struggle. After the camp when we got to go home I truly appreciated how important a warm home, clothes and food is to our basic survival.”
