After the Storm: Support for Bangladeshi Families

After the Storm: Support for Bangladeshi Families

At least a dozen people died when a tropical storm Mahasen struck coastal areas of Bangladesh in May. Almost 300,000 people in Patuakhali district were affected, and 3,665 were displaced – many of them poor and vulnerable families forced to live in temporary shelters made from salvaged materials.

More than 7,500 homes were destroyed, and over 18,000 damaged in the storm, which was downgraded from a cyclone as it weakened over the Bay of Bengal.

Islamic Relief’s emergency response in the storm’s aftermath is seeing 90 new shelters – complete with latrines – constructed, and one hundred homes repaired. When the project ends early next year, deep tube wells will also have been built for seven communities, with the organisation also working with local people to promote hygiene.

Islamic Relief has been working in Bangladesh – one of the most disaster-prone countries on earth – since 1991. As well as providing emergency response, we also carry out vital development projects in the country.
