With rapid social-economic development over that last 20 years since independence, Macedonia has undergone significant positive change. However, poverty and unemployment continue to pose significant problems for parts of the population.
With a population of just 2.1 million population, Macedonia is a small nation which has grown significantly in the last two decades. However, with around one in three people unemployed and over a quarter of the population living below the poverty line, many people face a daily struggle.
People across the country struggle as a result of poverty:
- Average life-expectancy is 76 years (UN, 2016)
- Around 1 in 5 of the population are aged 14 or younger (WHO, 2018)
