Islamic Relief is responding to the emergency in Assam and Bihar as overflowing rivers have left entire districts submerged affecting millions of people.

The emergency provisions include emergency shelter kits and safe drinking water for thousands of the most vulnerable households.

Supporting over 1,500 households in Assam

The Assam region has experienced heavy rainfall since May this year. Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes – roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure have been destroyed or washed away.

The situation is critical. Currently, 28,937 people are taking shelter in 123 relief camps. With monsoon rainfall set to continue in coming weeks, Islamic Relief UK remains committed to supporting relief efforts.

Temporary shelter kits are being provided to 440 of the most vulnerable households.

Our teams on the ground will also focus on ensuring affected communities have access to clean water, as well as providing hygiene kits for over 1,500 households.

Provisions for emergency shelter and water in Bihar

Heavy rainfall in north-eastern India and neighbouring Nepal over the last three days has triggered flash floods in parts of Bihar. More rain is forecast for the following days, and the situation is expected to deteriorate.

Islamic Relief teams on the ground have reported that many people have been killed.

Several districts have been submerged by the overflowing rivers, affecting at least two million people. Over 3,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

As part of the emergency response, Islamic Relief proposes to install water treatment plants, which will have the capacity to produce 1,000 litres of clean, safe drinking water per hour.

Our teams on the ground will also support the immediate humanitarian needs of people affected by the flooding in the Katihar District, providing water filters, hygiene kits and emergency shelter kits.
