An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen in Islamic Relief to work as the External Relations and Advocacy Manager in the UK Communications Department. The External Relations and Advocacy Manager will be responsible for developing an effective strategic plan to engage external stakeholders, forming and maintaining relationships in politics and wider society that serve Islamic Relief’s corporate relations and advocacy objectives. The role line manages two posts –Public Affairs Coordinator and Campaigns Coordinator and will communicate complex and politically sensitive issues via effective and timely external engagement, to produce compelling campaigns on issues affecting the NGO sector and the communities that Islamic Relief exists to serve.

The successful candidate must have substantial experience in:

  • Devising and implementing an External Relations and Advocacy strategy in line with Communications Department’s objectives and the wider organisational strategy
  • Managing an External Relations Unit

  • A strong understanding of media, politics and of Muslim and ethnic communities in the UK

Public Affairs Coordinator

An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen in Islamic Relief to work as the Public Affairs Coordinator in the UK Communications Department. The Public Affairs Coordinator will be responsible for raising awareness about IRUK and build relationships with key Parliamentarians to support IRUK’s work. To deliver this, the post holder will work with the External Relations and Advocacy Manager to draw up and implement IRUK’s Parliamentary Strategy. The Public Affairs Coordinator will also be the lead contact for Islamic Relief’s relationship with UK Parliamentarians (excluding government Ministers and key offices), political parties and other UK influencing targets.

The role will work closely with the Campaigns Coordinator on influencing projects and support other departments (such as Programmes) as necessary. They will also deliver key events (such as Party Conferences or Parliamentary panel events) to continually raise the profile of IRUK’s amongst political stakeholders.

  • Knowledge/experience of relationship management
  • Understanding of the charity sector and external/government affairs
  • Substantial communication skills and experience and strategic & political insights to utilise in parliamentary lobbying and other projects
  • Writing effective and persuasive project proposals, communications materials and resources
