The average Yemeni earns $460 a year, making Yemen's 19 million people among the poorest in the world. About 42 percent of households live below the poverty line, and unemployment levels are around 25%.
Basic health provision remains inadequate despite recent improvements, and Yemen has the lowest life expectancy in the Arab world.
Groundwater is dwindling at such a rate that parts of the rural economy could disappear within a generation. Newly introduced intensive agricultural methods are increasing the pressure on already stretched water supplies. It is feared that groundwater in the Sana’a basin will be pumped dry within a decade.
Islamic Relief in Yemen
Islamic Relief has been working in Yemen since 1998, on seasonal Ramadan and Udhiyah/Qurbani projects which have benefited over 25,000 people so far.
