Yemen

- Child Mortality: 1 in 9 children die before their fifth birthday

- 31% of the population do not have access to improved water sources

- The typical Yemeni uses only 11 percent of the average water consumption for the region

The average Yemeni earns $460 a year, making Yemen's 19 million people among the poorest in the world. About 42 percent of households live below the poverty line, and unemployment levels are around 25%.

Basic health provision remains inadequate despite recent improvements, and Yemen has the lowest life expectancy in the Arab world.

Groundwater is dwindling at such a rate that parts of the rural economy could disappear within a generation. Newly introduced intensive agricultural methods are increasing the pressure on already stretched water supplies. It is feared that groundwater in the Sana’a basin will be pumped dry within a decade.
