Dirty water kills 5 million people a year The average distance women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 km |
Inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene not only cause sickness and death, as shortages in water can lead to harvest failures and even famine. All these factors combine together to contribute to the continuing cycle of poverty in developing countries
Islamic Relief£s water & sanitation activities include:
- Building water supply systems in deprived areas
- Digging and restoring wells
- Implementing water purification projects
- Undertaking integrated sanitation programmes
- Community mobilisation and awareness programmes
Case Study : IndonesiaVillagers living in the mountains of West Java, Indonesia have no option but to drink dirty contaminated water. As a result, serious diseases such as cholera are common and a large proportion of the population suffers from severe skin rashes
However, in the Sukabumi District, villagers now have access to clean water. There are 21 watering points, 15 communal latrines and 140 homes now have their own latrines. Water is taken from wells dug by Islamic Relief to the water tanks near the village using bamboo pipes.
Bamboo is used rather than plastic as it does not melt in the intense heat and is also much more affordable. From the tank each member of the community has their own pipe which leads to their home, giving them their own source of clean safe water.
Community participation is very important in the success of the project. £We are really proud that we were able to have this scheme from Islamic Relief with our contribution. This is our project, although initiated by Islamic Relief, but we feel that it is our project, £ 54 year old Hajji Rahman, head of the local water management committee.
Help provide clean accessible water to help overcome the numerous problems associated with the lack of clean water and sanitation facilities.
£4 a month will support our ongoing water projects £37 a month provides a water hand pump in Kashmir £4800 provides for drilling boreholes and installing hand pumps in Darfur
