| Mohamed Masbon, from Maruthamunai in Sri Lanka, lost both is parents and his sister in the tsunami. The house he had grown up in was destroyed and its contents lost. In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami Mohamed and his two brothers stayed in temporary shelter and depended on friends and neighbours for food. Mohamed is a painter by trade and lost all his tools in the tsunami, leaving him with no way to support himself.
Islamic Relief provided Mohamed a small store so that he could begin to rebuild his life.
Mohamed is now married and has an eight-month-old baby daughter. His wife’s family look after the shop while he works as a painter.
“We lead a simple happy life now,” says Mohamed. “In the beginning it was terrible, but with Allah’s help, Islamic Relief intervention and my hard work I am fine.”
