Islamic Relief Response To NWFP Crisis
How Has Islamic Relief Responded To The NWFP Emergency? Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) has established an office in Mardan, in the North West Frontier Province from where we will coordinate our work in Mardan and Swabi.
Emergency relief Islamic Relief has delivered emergency aid to almost 1,500 displaced people in two union councils in Mardan District. The aid included hygiene kits, kitchen sets, clothing, mosquito nets and tents. In many cases this was the first aid that people had received.
Mercy Centres IRW is currently setting up 27 Mercy Centres in Mardan District that will provide a range of services for displaced people and also for the host community. These centres will provide primary healthcare, clean water and sanitation facilities and psychosocial support. Health and hygiene promoters will also work out of these centres to try and reduce the incidence of waterborne and communicable diseases.
Psychosocial support The Mercy Centres will offer child-friendly spaces where children can receive psychosocial support as well as have a safe place to play. IRW will also provide children with educational support, which will help them to cope with the trauma they have suffered.
Trained psychologists will provide counselling for traumatised people, focusing especially on the needs of children. We hope to reach 32,000 people through this project.
Reuniting families In addition, IRW is also setting up a project to track and reunite families who became separated in the chaos as people fled their villages.
Long term needs The needs in this region are vast as more people continue to flee their homes every day. They urgently need food, clean water, healthcare, shelter, and support to help them cope with the emotional trauma they have suffered.
Many people have left behind their homes, their land and their livelihoods. They do not know if they will have anything to return to when the crisis is over. Many villages have been completely destroyed and people will need help to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
