Kamil Bakhsher is 13 years old and was living with his parents, four sisters and two brothers in Buner when their village was attacked. As they fled, Kamil became separated from his family; he has not seen them since. He is now living in the Tara Kai camp in Swabi hoping that soon he will be reunited with his parents.
“It was a normal day when suddenly the helicopters came and started firing and shelling our village. It was so scary and everyone panicked. We were not prepared for this and didn’t know what we should do.
“I lost my parents”“Everyone was trying to run away and so my family ran too. But in the chaos I lost my parents and my two brothers and four sisters. I ran towards my uncle’s home but everyone had already left. I ran towards another group of people and joined them as they left our village, but I still could not find my family.
“All the people on the move were on their way towards Swabi, so I joined some fellow villagers and got on a vehicle that was going that way. We ended up in this camp and were provided with water and food.
Alone“At the camp my neighbours offered to let me stay with them. It has been a week since I came here but there has still been no sign of my parents. I strongly believe that they will come and find me and we will all be reunited as a family again.
“I can’t wait to go back to my village. I used to play with my brothers and sisters back home and I miss that as there is nowhere to play here. The whole day I wait and hope that my parents will come. It is difficult to be without your family.
“Life is meaningless”“I would like to finish my studies and become an engineer and earn money to help my family. Life in the camp is tough and without my loved ones around it is meaningless. I see other children and their parents taking care of them and it makes me sad. I can’t sleep properly, I can’t eat properly, I can’t do anything but think of my family.”
