Over 50% of the population is employed in agriculture and live in rural areas. Poverty remains widespread, with almost one in three Pakistanis living on less than $1 a day. In addition, over the past 20 years, Pakistan has hosted up to three million Afghan refugees.
Paksitan has suffered from major natural disasters in recent times; in 2010, it was overwhelmed by the worst floods in its history, affecting over 20 million people. Entire provinces and villages were reduced to rubble and crops for a whole season were destroyed.
In 2005, the lagest earthquake to hit South Asia in a century killed over 79,000 people and left three million homeless.
Islamic Relief in Pakistan
Islamic Relief has been working in Pakistan since 1992 and has successfully implemented many relief and development projects including drought relief in Balochistan, orphan support, prevention of blindness programs, and education enhancement programs. In addition, Islamic Relief has responded to disasters including earthquakes, droughts, cyclones and floods.
Islamic Relief responded to the floods with a £4 Million emergency relief programme, with daily distributions of life saving aid, benefiting over 400,000 poeple. Following the meregency phase, a comprehensive reconstruction programme was initiated to rebuild 60 villages, which is currently ongoing.
Following the 2005 earthquake, Islamic Relief was able to respond within hours due to the extensive network of volunteers in the region. In total, over 537,000 beneficiaries were served by Islamic Relief's emergency earthquake response efforts
