Orphan Sponsorship

  • There are 11 million orphaned children in Sub Saharan Africa due to AIDS
  • By 2010, Africa will have 42 million orphans

Losing one or both parents is traumatic for any child in any situation. In countries where war, famine or poverty is a part of everyday life,
millions of children are orphaned and left to struggle for survival.

Islamic Relief has been supporting orphans since 1986 and now have orphan sponsorship programmes in over 30 countries. These aim to reduce child poverty in the poorest communities through a comprehensive and integrated programme that takes care of each orphans needs, including; health, education, social welfare and shelter.

All sponsored orphans are selected by the local Islamic Relief office follwoing a needs assessment, which includes living conditions and family size, to ensure that the most needy recieve sponsorship.

As well as one-to-one orphan sponsorship, Islamic Relief supports orphans through housing projects, summer school and vocational training.

Currently over 30,000 orphans are sponsored through Islamic Relief.

Case Study: Salam from Bangladesh

Salam lives with his mother and siblings in a one-room corrugated iron shack.

After her husband died, Salam's mother, Saleha worked as a housemaid, earning a meagre income. The family ate vegetable leaves for food, and Saleha would sometimes bring home bowls of rice from work.

In 2006 Salam was selected to be part of the orphan sponsorship programme and was sponsored by a donor from USA. He now enjoys three good meals a day with his family and is at the top of his class at school. Salam's ambition is to become an engineer so that he can build a house for his mother.
