It is estimated that over 7 million people are at risk. In some parts of the country, people are forced to scavenge for food and have no access to clean drinkable water.
Following torrential rain, Niger has suffered its worst flooding since 1929, further affected a people already stricken by a food crisis.
Almost 200,000 people are homeless and there are serious fears of an outbreak of cholera
Islamic Relief is responding to the current floods with emergency food distributions, in partnership with UNICEF and World Food Programme.
Also, a new therapeutic feeding centre for malnourished children has opened and along with thew 18 existing centres supported by Islamic Relief, is providing essential food items for children.
Additionally, a blanket feeding programme for children aged 6-26 months has commenced, with almost 20,000 children targeted to benefit.
Islamic Relief in Niger
Islamic Relief began working in Niger in June 2005.
Our programmes include the drilling/digging of wells, installation of hand pumps as well as solar powered water systems that provides water for a large village.
Other programmes cover Health and Nutrition, including therapeutic feeding centres for severely malnourished children. There are also 35 community integrated health centres with Supplementary Feeding Centres to provide rehabilitation for moderately malnourished children.
