The holy month of Ramadan saw a large increase in donations to our Syria emergency appeal,” says Mohammed Alsousi, Islamic Relief’s Head of Syria Operations. “The overwhelming concern and generosity of our supporters has enabled us to expand our already extensive operations in Syria and neighbouring countries.

Islamic Relief steps up medical aid inside Syria as emergency operation hits £3 million mark

22/08/2012

Islamic Relief is sending more life-saving medical supplies to Syria in response to the country’s escalating conflict and mounting numbers of casualties. We are now supplying medical aid in a cross-border operation from two neighbouring countries, enabling mobile clinics to treat thousands of people in Syria’s war-torn cities.

The latest supplies, ranging from small packs for the treatment of minor injuries to larger kits that can be used for surgery, are being transported from the border areas to the cities by Syrian volunteers. They pass on the supplies to doctors and nurses who are operating mobile clinics where the main hospitals are no longer functioning.

This latest medical aid is part of a major Islamic Relief emergency response that has now provided £3 million worth of assistance to the people of Syria in 2011-2012. Medicines and food have been delivered deep inside Syria in recent months, and tens of thousands of refugees forced out by the intense fighting have received food, medical attention, clean water and help with accommodation in neighbouring Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq.

“The holy month of Ramadan saw a large increase in donations to our Syria emergency appeal,” says Mohammed Alsousi, Islamic Relief’s Head of Syria Operations. “The overwhelming concern and generosity of our supporters has enabled us to expand our already extensive operations in Syria and neighbouring countries.

“Access into Syria is severely restricted and extremely dangerous but we are working with extraordinarily brave Syrians who are risking their lives to get medical help to those who need it most. We are also providing activities to help refugee children overcome the horrific psychological trauma that many have experienced.”
