- 1 in 8 children will die before their fifth birthday
- 40% of the population is unemployed
- 16 million people live on less than $1 a day
Recent conflict carried over from the end of 2007 until now has made food security in Kenya a serious problem. Massive movements of internally displaced peoples (IDPs) from areas of food production to IDP camps, erratic weather and the increase in food prices have all greatly affected food availability in Kenya.
Although food reserves have managed to allow Kenya to avoid 60% of the global food price increases, the current stocks of food will not last much longer. Reduced food production, increased costs in transporting food and speculation by traders controlling food commodities are expected to quickly push Kenya further into a food crisis.
It is estimated that close to 70% of the total population of Kenya will soon be affected by food insecurity, causing major social consequences and political unrest.

In 2006, Islamic Relief responded to the food crisis in Kenya and the Horn of Africa providing clean water, healthcare and food and nutrition.
Islamic Relief is in Kenya coordinating the following types of food distributions for 2,000 households in IDP camps in the Afghoy district :
- Wheat flour
