Indonesia Earthquake Claims More Than 1000 Lives

Two earthquakes stuck Padang District on the 30th September 09. One 7.6-magnitude quake struck at 17:16 local time (10:16 GMT) causing a small Tsunami, followed by a second Earthquake at 17:38 local time measuring 6.2 magnitude. Over 1000 people are now dead and over 2500 badly injured as a result of the twin earthquakes in Sumatra, Indonesia. Many people are still are trapped under rubble of hotels and buildings and heavy lifting equipment is required to free them.

Collapsed Buildings

Indonesia's National Disaster Agency informed that more than 500 houses and buildings had collapsed. Thousands of people are believed displaced by this disaster. Air monitoring around the city of Padang shows there are still many areas not reached and isolated because many bridges are damaged.

Some telecommunications networks are now up and running but the lack of electricity means that many communities cannot charge their batteries.

Heavy Rain

Heavy rain is still pouring at Padang City and Padang Pariaman District causing disruption to the rescue effort and stones & mud to slide down the hills onto roads & houses. Blackouts in the whole West Sumatra province and constant rain have hindered the evacuation process. Refugees are predicted to be stranded in the fields without any protection, electricity, food and water this evening.

There are many things that those affected need immediately. These include:

  • Instant food for adults, baby food, and clean water is urgently needed.
  • About 100,000 plastic sheets are required for temporary shelter. Tents would be better.
  • Clothing: shirts are in immediate need for adults and children.
  • Blankets, sanitation, and hygiene kits
