| Following a long typhoid illness, 60 year old Mastan Sahib is now bound to a chair. He can no longer work as he cannot move around.
Mastan lives with Baba Jan his only son. Their home does not have electricity and the water has to be fetched from a nearby community facility. Baba Jan is 16 years old and works in a tea-stall and earns Rs. 40/- (US$ 0.80) per day. He has worked on the tea stall as well as cared for his father for the past ten years. Because of this, Baba never went to school.
The food Mastan eats is bought each day with the earnings his son brings home. The local market is over 2kms away and as Mastan cannot move around, he is dependent upon his son to get his the food for him. Mastan says that beef is the staple diet of the locals but for him and his son, they are unable to afford it more than once a week.
As beneficiaries of Islamic Relief Qurbani meat, Mastan and Baba will have been given enough meat to last them for two days. For those who provided the meat Mastan said, “May Allah give them long life and Barkath (Benediction). And ability to provide more for others”.
