India

- Average annual income: $460

- 44% of the population lives on less than $1 per day

- Almost half of the population is illiterate

India has significant social, economic and environmental problems. It has the largest concentration of the poor in the world, with approximately 75% of the population living in rural areas, the majority of whom are illiterate. Furthermore, an estimated one third of the Indian population lives below the poverty line.

Islamic Relief in India

Islamic Relief has been consistently implementing emergency programs and development projects in the country. Seasonal Ramadan and Qurbani programs take place every year and a sizeable orphans' welfare program is also in operation.

Emergency programs took place in 1999 after the Orissa Cyclone and in 2001 after the Gujarat Earthquake. Islamic Relief's sustainable development projects include water projects and Islamic micro-credit ventures, such as small business loans providing economic opportunity to those populating the sprawling slums that are adjacent to most Indian cities.
