Debt
The 'debt' of world's poorest counties was recently estimated to be $2.7 trillion. Since 1996, the world's poorest 66 counties have paid a total of more than $230 billion between them in interest - this amount far exceeds any aid they have received in return, so in reality, poor countries have been making rich countries richer.

Fairtrade
The growth of international trade has brought about significant economic benefits and prosperity to many. However, small-scale producers in many poor countries – especially those that depend upon farming of a single crop - are unable to compete in a world market controlled by multinationals and distorted by the subsidies provided by rich countries to their producers.

Microfinance
Microfinance loans allow poor people to start their own businesses and look after themselves – rather than having to reply on the charity of others. If they succeed, their income increases and they then spend more money locally – which, in turn, helps other people. Microfinance loans, therefore, help not only the person receiving the loan but also others in the local economy.

Environment
Islam encourages people to protect the earth and all life on it, and to maintain the balance in nature as created by God. We live, however, in a world of pollution, deforestation, climate change and desertification, and in this world, environmental concerns are often forgotten in favour of short-term economic benefit. Yet the problems caused by environmental degradation will not only affect future generations, they already threaten the world's population today.

Reproductive Health
Poor reproductive health is an enormous problem in the developing world. According to the UN, in 2005 more than 500,000 women died during pregnancy, childbirth, or in the six weeks following delivery. Ninety-nine per cent of these deaths occurred in the poorest regions - with sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia accounting for 86 per cent of the total. In sub-Saharan Africa, a woman's risk of dying from a treatable or preventable complication in pregnancy and childbirth is 1:22 - compared to 1:7,300 in developed countries.
