Rebuilding Schools

Rosniar is a teacher at Suak Pandan Elementary School in the Samahani District, Meulaboh, Indonesia. The school was destroyed in the 2004 tsunami.

Islamic Relief re-built Suak Pandan in 2007 and according to Rosniar it is now better than ever. It has six classrooms, a headmaster’s office, a staff-room, clinic, library, prayer room and canteen.

“I was so touched to get this beautiful school. I always dreamt that Suak Pandan would be better,”says Rosniar.

Many local children were killed in the tsunami, meaning that Suak Pandan only has 50 pupils, though there is space for over 150, but Rosniar is optimistic that the numbers will soon grow.

Rosniar and her pupils are very proud of their school and take good care of it. “We don’t want the building to be damaged due to lack of care. The school must last forever,” Rosnira says.
