Islamic Relief has distributed 5,305 loans since the start of the income generation
project in 2001. This year alone 1,682,636 EUR in 1,513 different loans has been
distributed.
“The best achievement is the helping of the poor population, the refugees, families
of the martyrs of the war, the illiterate and those that the banks would never approve
of. The problem that we have had until now was and is lack of money for loans as
there are massive needs.”
Music Rasid is 58, he is retired and collecting his pension and is the 5000th loan
recipient in Bosnia.
“We are using firewood or heating as electricity is too expensive. We heat one room
to save the wood for the long winter. I buy firewood on credit from people and repay
it during the year. I have diabetes and it is making things difficult for me… the
medicines are expensive and hard to obtain.”
Before the war life was better, Music had a job, a house and some land, life was
comfortable. Now, Music explains, no two days are the same. There is a constant
fight to staying alive and feeding the family.
“It is very hard to exist in such difficult circumstances and hard times. Even though
I am ill, I am trying my best to earn something additional by doing different work.
My only wish is to finish building this house and to get a decent job for my other
daughter.”
