Ramadan

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar and is a time when Muslims abstain from eating or drinking during daylight hours, in order to learn self-restraint, amongst other things.  This short document is a brief introduction to Ramadan and is aimed at teachers and adults who perhaps are not aware of what Ramadan is.  Islamic relief can be contacted with any further questions using any of the methods given on this website.

Islam - Central Beliefs and Practices

Islam is a very misunderstood religion, with the actions of a few exceptions unfortunately being used to define the rule. This presentation is a basic introduction to Islam through the 5 Pillars. It explains each pillar, and its significance. The presentation would be ideal for use with KS2 or KS3 students, and also for adults who perhaps would like to learn the basics.

Fasting - An Islamic Perspective

Ramadan is the month in which Muslims who are both old enough and healthy enough are required to fast between dawn to dusk.  The purpose of this is of course firstly to remember the poor; but the purpose is also for Muslims to reconnect with God.  It is a time when through hunger, Muslims re-engage with the reality that they are so very poor whilst God is endlessly rich, and that everything we have is due to his good grace.

This presentation would be a useful way to explain to children not only why Muslims fast, but also to show that it isn't a particularly unique activity

Christians, Hindu's and others do after all, fast in some way or another...'

Debt and Climate Change

'This presentation shows how the issues of debt and climate change are inextricably linked. Climate change is causing poverty, which in turn forces people into debt. The need raise money to pay off this debt leads to deforestation and other activities which harm the environment.

One therefore cannot look at these issues in isolation, but as problems that unfortunately reinforce each other. More radical action is definitely needed to solve these problems.

Building Lives

This book is about the work of aid agencies, with a special focus on faith-based agencies such as Islamic Relief. It will tell you what aid agencies and faith based agencies do, how they work, where they work, and also inspires them in the first place. The book is suitable for KS2 and lower KS3 level, and is accompanied by some activity sheets which help to make teaching the subject more interactive, and which are also downloadable from this site.

Why not download some of the posters or case studies to use in conjunction with the exercises in this book?

Opposite are sample pages from our new Building Lives publication, an exciting new resource for Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage 3. The publication comes with pre-designed activities, is tailored for the national curriculum, and can be used to teach R.E, Geography, and Citizenship. If after reading these pages you would like to order full copies, as we hope you will, then you should either complete and submit the materials booking form, or email us on education@islamic-relief.org.uk

Muslim Perspectives on Citizenship

This publication is about responding to the needs of teachers and schools working in a global and interdependent society. International events, particularly since September 11th 2001, have thrust Muslims and their communities into the global media spotlight.

Young people of all faiths and cultures may often be growing up in an increasingly divided world. . This booklet responds to an interest expressed by many teachers to explore the Muslim perspectives on citizenship and the sharing of ideas.
Muslim Action Guide

Unfair trade rules continue to lock millions of people in the developing world in poverty. Two billion people – a third of humanity – work hard to support themselves yet still struggle to survive on just £1 a day or less. Fairtrade is a way to ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their produce.

This guide offers a Muslim perspective on Fairtrade by quoting the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad to show why this initiative is so important in the Islamic faith.

Water Leaflet

Water is Life! It’s a simple enough quote to understand but do people really understand just how literally true it is? Do people really understand how far many millions of people around the world must travel every day just to get a drink of water? Do people really understand that children under the age of 10 must often carry heavy containers of water so their family can survive?

This leaflet is designed to show children at KS2 - and beyond - the importance of water (and lack of it), as well as other key problems faced by the world's poor.

The leaflet was designed to be double-sided but for technical reasons, the download will only be single-sided. If you would like hard copies of these water leaflets, please contact us and we will endeavour to help.

Islam & Environment

Islam encourages people to protect the earth and to maintain the balance in nature as created by God. We live, however, in a world of pollution, deforestation, climate change and desertification, and in this world, environmental concerns are often forgotten in favour of economic benefit. Yet the problems caused by environmental degradation will not only affect future generations, they already threaten the world’s population today.

Islam & Debt

It is well known that debt is one of the root causes of poverty in many poor countries. Less well known is how Islam, a religion with charitable giving, social rights and justice at its core, deals with the issue. Muslim teachings are rarely utilised in the international discourse on 'unjust' debt and its consequences, yet studying them reveals many ways that the debt crisis could be tackled and ways in which similar problems could be avoided in the future.

Faith in the Market Place

“O you who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers.”

This verse in the Qur’an is an invitation for humanity to make a relatively small effort in this world, in return for the eternal reward of the hereafter. It is a call to save ourselves from becoming fixated on our wealth and on providing our children with the latest gadget and games, which ultimately are mere distractions from our remembrance of the Creator.
