Education for Future Improvement

Matiullah is just 21 years old yet he is the sole carer for his four sisters and five brothers."I am the only one to look after my family" he explains, "The monthly salary I receive is 2,200 Afghanis which is not enough to support such a large family. The prices for basic food and non-food items are out of the control and inflation is very high". Despite not having enough to buy food, Matiullah" day is a long one. Between English lessons that begin at 6:00am and computer studies that finish at 6:00pm, the time in between is used to teach at the local school.

More than 20 years of conflict, combined with the worst drought in 30 years has caused widespread suffering and displacement of the Afghani population. For many like Matiullah who was born during the conflict, they cannot remember a time of peace and stability.

Through various different projects, Islamic Relief is helping to relieve the suffering of some of the most vulnerable in Afghanistan. Through the Ensuring Quality Education for School Children in Kandahar project alone, more than 62,720 people have so far benefited. Islamic Relief has assisted with the construction of schools, a teacher training college, the implementing of professional training to non-formal teachers and the provision of office equipment to the education directorate. It is also continuing to distribute both food and non-food items.

“After more than two decades of war and internal conflicts” says Matiullah, “schools are now reopening and the opportunity for getting an education exists. I hope my children will be educated”.

Nonetheless, Matiullah acknowledges the help that Islamic Relief has provided. “I sincerely appreciate Islamic Relief’s assistance towards the most deserving people of Afghanistan.
