| | | In one of Lunda's mud houses was the Musa family, expecting a new member to join the family within days. They watched as the water rose at an alarming pace, forcing them to run out toward safe, high ground and within minutes, the water was up to their necks. Amazingly, the Musa family managed to escape alive. A medical team reached them and thankfully baby Fawadullah was born safely.
As Fawadullah approaches his first birthday, he has never seen the mud house his family used to live in: he is growing up in an earthquake and flood-resistant brick home built through Islamic Relief's village reconstruction programme. He has clean, fresh water to drink, sourced from the flood-resistant well and soon, he will learn to use the new latrine, part of a 5,000 ft drainage system to prevent flooding in the future. Lunda has many child-safe areas and a newly built medical centre to make sure he stays protected from harm. His family have received essential items for the house, as well as the means to earn a living without having to rely upon others.
A year on after the devastating floods, thousands of children like Fawadullah are growing up in an environment of hope for a bright future.
